Six months after a federal judge dismissed special counsel Jack Smith's classified documents case against Donald Trump and his two co-defendants, defense attorneys are set to return to Florida to try to prevent the limited release of Smith's final report detailing his investigation.

Florida Judge Aileen Cannon stated Monday that she would not block the release of Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith's report on President-elect Donald Trump's 2020 election interference case.

On Monday, the federal judge presiding over the classified documents case in Florida allowed the Justice Department to release part of Smith’s final report. According to court filings, the report is a detailed review of the decisions Smith made in his two indictments against Trump.

Six months after she dismissed the classified documents case against Donald Trump, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon can now decide whether to squash the release of Jack Smith's report, too.

The Florida-based judge did not immediately rule on whether the Justice Department can move forward with its plan to show the report to a handful of lawmakers.

A judge is hearing arguments Friday on whether members of Congress will be permitted to view Jack Smith's final report on Donald Trump's classified documents case.
